Fall Planting Day

October 20, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

In the North Carolina Piedmont, fall is for planting, and this is especially true for trees and shrubs. By planting in autumn when woody plants are going dormant, transplanting stress is greatly reduced, and new plants can focus on root growth throughout the winter as long as the ground is not frozen. New trees and shrubs with strong winter-grown root systems are much better able to handle the heat and drought that often characterizes our summers.

Thanks to a generous donation from the New Hope Audubon Society’s Bird-friendly Communities Program, we will be adding a number of native deciduous and evergreen shrubs and trees that will provide food and shelter for birds and other wildlife. Volunteer planters are welcome. Please wear sturdy garden clothes and bring your favorite planting tools; spades, shovels, and rakes will be especially useful for planting bird-friendly woody plants. No experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome; email registration is encouraged.
