Invasive Species

December 1, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Event Navigation

Planning is underway for this early-winter event. Invasive, non-native plants and animals are the second greatest threat to biodiversity on the planet. In the Piedmont region of North Carolina, a number of invasive, non-native plants are seriously degrading the health of remaining woodlands and fields.

At this event, you will learn more about invasive, non-native species, especially those plants that are the biggest threats to Piedmont woodlands. If weather permits, there will be a demonstration of one of the methods used to eliminate invasive non-native woody plants from the landscape. Called “cutting and painting,” the technique involves cutting the woody invader at the base of its trunk, then using a small paintbrush to “paint” herbicide on the freshly cut surface. The trunk pulls the herbicide into the roots and kills the invader.
